The National Forest Strategy is a consensus document that guides Canadians in their ongoing work in sustainable forest management. The Strategy is prepared by the National Forest Strategy Coalition, a network of governments, Aboriginal People, the timber-based industry, non-timber forest product organizations, academia, research institutes, the recreation and tourism industry, forest practitioners, private woodlot owners, environmentalists and others with an interest in the future of Canada’s forests.
The National Forest Strategy Coalition retained Hardy Stevenson and Associates Limited to facilitate the creation of the Fifth National Forest Strategy. HSAL designed and facilitated seven two-day workshops across Canada to obtain a range of viewpoints on issues affecting forestry, and elements to consider in a vision of Canada’s forests. Participants reflected the makeup of the Coalition, with large representation from Aboriginal communities, various levels of government and the forest industry.
Our facilitators led groups of up to 150 participants through individual, small and large group techniques throughout seven cross-Canada workshops. The outcomes of these workshops, along with associated consultation workbooks, were analyzed and compiled in a series of consultation reports that outlined common themes and unique ideas related to a vision for Canada’s forests.
At the end of a subsequent two-day national workshop, members of the National Forest Strategy Coalition reached agreement on the strategic direction and on the priority of action items to be implemented to achieve the vision. The new fifth National Forest Strategy (2003-2008), A Sustainable Forest: The Canadian Commitment, was unveiled at Canada’s 9th National Forest Congress.
