St. Clair West Transit Improvement Study
> How Can We Help You > St. Clair West Transit Improvement Study

0When one thinks of Toronto's strong visual features, one thinks of streetcars. More than another method of conveyance, they are an essential and necessary way of moving large numbers of people.

The Route 512 streetcar has been riding along St. Clair since 1911. In the mid-1930s, the City removed the right-of-way for the streetcar and operated the streetcar in mixed traffic. As the volume of traffic increased, transit service along St. Clair began to suffer. This problem was compounded as the condition of the tracks deteriorated.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) hired HSAL, along with Marshall Macklin Monaghan, to conduct an Environmental Assessment study on improving service for the 512 streetcar. Our role was to act as a neutral 'third party' and facilitate the numerous workshops and meetings.

Due to the potential effects of the project, many businesses and residents raised concerns about proceeding with a dedicated right-of-way. Many other residents and transit riders strongly supported the proposed improvements. To capture these voices, we teamed up with MMM to implement a comprehensive public consultation process. In total, we facilitated over 6 workshops and 10 public meetings involving over 1,500 participants. The improvements to the 512 route were overwhelmingly approved by City of Toronto Councillors.
